Why No-one Is Reading Your Company’s Blog

November 24, 2020

A company blog can be a great tool for attracting new leads to your website. However, like any type of marketing content, you need to approach it with a strategy for it to be effective. Without a clear strategy, you won’t get many readers – and you won’t get any extra leads. Below are some of the common reasons as to why company blogs go unread and how you can change this.

Topics are too general

If you own a cybersecurity company and you’re posting generic blog posts such as ‘How to secure your business online’ and ‘5 ways to secure your business’, you aren’t going to get many readers. There are likely thousands of other blogs posts out there on the web taking the same angle. Instead, try to focus on developing fresh content that might appeal to more niche questions. Topics such as ‘how to create strong and memorable passwords’ and ‘Email phishing tactics to be wary of’ are better angles. Doing your own unique research and posting your findings can be a particularly great way of increasing readers.

Your posts are full of spelling/grammar errors

Spelling and grammar errors will make your blog posts seem unprofessional. It’s important that any blog content you write isn’t rushed and that you proof-read it afterwards. This could help you to avoid embarrassing typos and grammatical mistakes. There are plenty of online tools that you can use for checking spelling and grammar

Your content is too salesy

Your blog posts should be informational – not overly promotional. While they can be a means of generating leads, the primary purpose should be to offer friendly advice. If readers feel that you’re trying too hard to promote your product to them, they might assume the information is biased and not truly aimed at their best interests. You can read this guide to better understand how to convert blog content into leads. With a good content marketing strategy, you can create useful informational posts that also attract new customers.

You’re not sharing blog posts on social media

Don’t expect to attract all your readers from search engines alone. Social media can be a great tool for sharing your blog posts online and gaining extra exposure. In fact, it could be the main source of your readership. If you have Facebook and Twitter accounts for your business, consider using these to share links to your blog posts every time they are published. There are tools that you can use to automatically share posts as soon as they are published. You can also repost content on social media to attract new readers.

You’re not posting enough content

Your blog won’t attract consistent return readers if you only update it three times per year. Ideally, you need to be publishing a new post at least once per week. This shows readers that you’re dedicated to your blog and that they can expect new content in the future. Set up a blogging schedule so that you’re creating new content each week.
