4 Idiot-Proof Tips to Make Better Business Decisions

November 2, 2020

Being a successful business leader is all about making the right decisions. As a manager or boss, people look to you to do the right thing, and you are there to inspire confidence in others. A business owner who ums and ahs over every decision or tries to keep everyone happy at all costs will look ineffectual and will struggle to gain respect.

Any CEO worth his salt knows that confident-decision making is crucial to stay alive in the shark tank that is modern business. But for those new to management or who have just entered the world of business, it can be difficult to summon up the confidence and the mental strength to get things done without wavering. It can be stressful and challenging, but if you want to get ahead, you need to know how to make the right decisions and execute them.

Here are four tips to help you get started.

Know your stuff

It seems obvious, but the more knowledgeable you are about your industry and business, the better equipped you will be to make those all-important decisions. Make sure you gather all the relevant facts and know your industry inside and out. Striving to gain more objective knowledge helps you to eliminate potentially harmful biases and prevents you from missing crucial information that could make a massive difference in how you manage your business.

Focus on results

When making big decisions, you should always have the results in mind. This is true whether you're picking a new design for your logo, planning your marketing strategy, or choosing business insurance as an accountant. Many business leaders who lack confidence focus too much on keeping people happy or maintaining a certain image, but this will ultimately result in poor decisions and subsequently poor results. You need to work out what the right step for your business is and strive for that outcome. And if you end up treading on some toes along the way, that is the price of being in business for yourself.

Ask around

There's no shame in getting help. Even the most successful people in the world have advisors and assistants on hand to help them make the right decision. Presidents, prime ministers and business titans throughout history have had whole teams and counsels to advise them on the best course of action. It is the leader's job to weigh up all the advice, take in all the facts and then make the right decision. As a small business owner, it's essential that you talk to your business colleagues and partners when it comes to making big decisions. This will allow you to consider viewpoints other than your own and get new perspectives which could affect your actions. Although the ultimate decision will be yours, guidance from others can be invaluable.

Learn from your mistakes

There isn't a business leader in history who hasn't made a mistake, although some probably wouldn't like to admit it. Mistakes are an unavoidable part of business, but the key is learning from them and adjusting your course of action from there. Reflect upon what you did right and what you could have improved upon. The ability to reflect without judgement is a vital characteristic of the best leaders and will help you improve your leadership qualities to no end.
